We arranged with Baytree Garden Centre to play on this Sunday afternoon. The weather was good and Baytree allowed us to play outside under some shade. There were surprisingly few people in the garden centre, but many of them came over to listen. The audience particularly liked our opening number Aces High and commented on the connection with the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain.
We had a good turnout of experienced players, but too many of the younger players were absent!
30th June 2010 - Concert for Holbeach Primary Schools
Holbeach Town Band learner group and main band performed at the William Stukeley School to a combined audience from the two Holbeach Primary Schools. The learner group entertained the audience for half-an-hour playing pieces from their repertoire; some of them played the pieces they are using for their music grades.
While the main band set up, children and adults in the audience were encouraged to try out the instruments and were told about the band's training programme
The main band followed with a full concert which was very well received, particularly the march Aces High and the Theme from Pirates of the Caribbean. The band invited children from the audience to join in and play a variety of percussion instruments.
10th July 2010 - Moulton Seas End Fete
A very warm day at Moulton Seas End. We played at the playing field down a narrow roadway off the main road. It wasn't signposted and there were a number of band cars driving up and down the road trying to finf it! We sent bandmembers to the entrance, so the reat of the band could find us.
We were asked to play throughout the afternoon, with breaks. They had no programme of events, so we played for half an hour from 12.00 then broke for lunch. When we got back a dog show had started and they asked us not to play as it would frighten the dogs; a punch and judy show was also about to start and he asked us not to play as it would disrupt his show; then a singer and guitarist started to play. We eventually got to play just before 3.00pm.
18th July 2010 - Patchett Lodge
We had a really good turnout for a pleasant afternoon at the Patchett Lodge Summer Gala. We were booked to play from 2.30 to 3.30pm but when we arrived they asked us to play for 35-40 minutes, so we were finished by 3.10. We played incidental music to an appreciative audience.
26th to 30th July 2010 - Learn to Play Week
Monday: A good start. Musical Director Mel Hopkin, assisted by Yvonne, Kim, Brian and Diane from the main band and Jimmy, Ruby and Jasmine from the Leaner group met 11 new learners aged 6 to 67. After trying out various instruments, the new learners settled on instruments of their choice. They started playing open notes, then moved on to the first 5 notes of the scale.
Tuesday: All back again for a second day. We went over the work of yesterday and progressed towards the full C major scale. Some of the learners managed to play the full scale. They also did some work on rhythms.
Wednesday: All back again, plus three more who had seen us at our Primary school visits. We kept looking at the C Major cale plus long notes. We also looked at rhythms and started by clapping along to them then playing them.
Thursday: Not quite as many today, but still a good turnout. We did more work on rhythms and moved onto simple tunes with a mixture of notes of different lengths and pitch. They then played When The Saints Go Marching In in unison. We ended the session with a look at a full band arrangement of the hymn tune Eudoxia with the learners playing individual parts.
Friday: All except one are back for the last day. Making really good progress and playing simple tunes in unison and Eudoxia in parts. All those who attended were given a certificate of attendance. All the Learners were invited to join the band learner sessions on Wednesday evenings. Many thanks to the hepers Kim, Yvonne, Brian, Diane, Ruby and Jasmine.
31st July 2010 - Gedney Dawsmere 70th Anniversary, Battle of Britian
 We really enjoyed this event. The newly formed Gedney Dawsmere Branch of the Royal British Legion
organised a Service at Christchurch, Dawsmere to commemorate the Battle of Britain 1940, followed by a fete. We were invited to play the hymns at the service and then played for an hour at the fete.
Things started badly, because our music stands were left at the bandroom. We were seated in the choir stalls, so had somewhere to prop the hymn books. During the service when of our helpers went back to the bandroom to collect the stands.
 After the service we moved across the road to the fete. We were given a good sized gazebo, which was as well because it started to rain while we were setting up. It rained quite hard but eventually cleared for bright sunshine.
We ahd a good turn-out and tor band played really well. We included suitable tunes - Aces High, Keep Smiling Through, 633 Squadron - in our programme and ended with the last sections of Fantasia of British Sea Songs
22 August 2010 - Band BBQ
We were lucky to have a nice day for our Band BBQ. It was held on Spalding grammar School's playing field. The band members and families enjoyed hot dogs, burgers and chicken portions and drumsticks cooked on the barbie by MD Mel and his wife, Trish. The band members provided salads and afters. After the food, there were fun and ball games on the ample playing fields.
12 September 2010 - Hovenden House
We opened the annual Hovenden House Fete at Fleet, near Holbeach. We played at the opening for an hour from 12.30. We had a good turnout and played a good varied programme. The weather was kind and the audience very appreciative. Hovenden House is Cheshire Home, so we included music from the war (Keep Smiling Through), for the 70th Anniversary of the Battle of Britain (Aces High) and from the Festival of Remembrance (Fantasia on British Sea Songs).
